Biodiversity and Environmental Resource Data System of Belize (BERDS)
The Biodiversity & Environmental Resource Data System of Belize (BERDS) is a comprehensive biodiversity and environmental data warehouse and research tool set.
What makes BERDS unique is its integrated spatial approach to data analysis, management and dissemination. BERDS merges a wide array of useful data resources (e.g., documents, people, organisations, projects, specimen collections, datasets, multimedia) with an integrated and comprehensive GIS mapping and analysis capability to form a powerful data visualisation and investigation toolset for research and monitoring efforts.
BERDS has fully integrated mapping capabilities throughout the system:
The largest assemblage of spatial data is found within the Map Explorer Application - providing visual and text access to over 30 accurate and up-to-date spatial layers including climate, freshwaters, environment, people and society, LANDSAT imagery and specimen collections data as well as a unique visual-based search facility. The MapExplorer is a visual gateway to the underlying BERDS data, making it a research tool and not merely a map browser.
Beyond the Map Explorer, in-line maps are generated on-the-fly for ecosystems, protected areas, watersheds, species distributions, specimen localities, field stations, hydrologic metering systems, etc throughout the entire site.
Spatial integration is not limited to just 'visual mapping services.' BERDS employs spatial data throughout the system to provide real-time spatial analysis of any data. This functionality delivers the most accurate and up-to-date information available on underlying physiographic characteristics, habitats and species distributions. This information is automatically adjusted as new data are added to the BERDS system. BERDS automates the provisioning of a huge amount of biophysical detail for each data point that would be very laborious to collect by hand and often isn't collected at all.
System: MapServer, PHP/MapScript, PostgreSQL/PostGIS and custom coding, WMS/WFS service, spatial data and metadata warehouse, full integration with underlying relational database for detailed data visualiation and exploration.
