Scope of foundation activities

by Tyler Mitchell last modified 2006-03-15 10:42

A draft set of ideas defining the scope of the foundation - its roles and areas of interest

The foundation will seek to adopt or create projects that are of the highest quality. The foundation will be focused on the projects that are under its management and not on open source geospatial applications in general. The first projects under the foundation's responsibility will be those represented or 'donated' at the startup of the foundation. Other projects will be invited to join after the foundation is initially set up. A process will be created for evaluating projects that seek adoption by the foundation. New projects will ultimately be accepted or denied based on a vote by the foundation membership, after a review by a 'new projects' working group.

Areas of interest for projects will be initially focused on web mapping applications.

Potential areas of interest will include: web mapping applications, geospatial support libraries, desktop mapping/GIS applications, extension and promotion initiatives, open geospatial data repository initiatives, 'bridge-ware' projects that connect open source and proprietary products.
